Two "the five people are" clues

I'm pretty new to logic puzzles, but improving every day. However these situations completely stump me.

I've now come across a couple 5x5 puzzles that have more than one "the five people are" clues.

So far, the only way I can figure these out is by plotting them out in Excel - making two separate tables and trying to work out where the clues correspond. This takes me FOREVER and I've actually had to just guess on one of them. Is there an easy strategy for working these type of puzzles out?

Some help

The following was posted by Stephen (the administrator) in an old thread from 2008. It shows how to use a single 5 person clue. For 2 of them, just do it twice.

Clues in the format: "The five people are A, B, C, D and E" can be extremely helpful when solving logic puzzles, as they allow you to eliminate quite a lot of squares from the solving grid.

Remember that every one of the five slots in that clue (A, B, C, D and E) are five different people, so none of the five items listed will ever be paired with another item from that list. This means you can eliminate a large number of possible pairings from the grid, i.e.

- A does not equal B
- A does not equal C
- A does not equal D
- A does not equal E
- B does not equal C
- B does not equal D
- B does not equal E
- C does not equal D
- C does not equal E
- D does not equal E

Hope this helps! :-)

always address the 5's clues first

When starting a puzzle, seek out the '4'or '5 persons are' clues and check the boxes indicated first, before the board gets cluttered with other stuff.

Despite the list of ten items shown above for a '5 persons' clue , you will only check nine boxes because two items will fall in the same category, and they are exclusive by ddefault

'4 persons' clues will allow you to check 6 boxes, which matches the number of combinations indicated on an A thru D list. This is because the clues typically include only one item or person from each catwgory.

Geeze, all I do is ...

Say the "5 people" are: Red, Baseball, Volleyball, Tuna, Spagetti

I start with Red - Red is not Baseball, Volleyball, Tuna or Spagetti

Next, Baseball - Baseball is not Volleyball (skip this one because, obviously, they are in the same category), not Tuna or Spagetti

Volleyball is not Tuna or Spagetti

and finally, Tuna is not Spagetti

I find this easy, but, am I missing anything? I'm not "sub" genius for nothing.

In this context, no. However, if person A and B can both only be Tuna/Red, that means person C,D,E have to be Baseball, Volleyball, and Spaghetti. Deductive reasoning causes C,D,E to be those three because if A is red, B is tuna, and vice versa.

Personally, I copy the clue into the notes and put the persons name beside each of the things they are eligible.

I wish we got more frequent puzzles with TWO of the "5 people are". Those show up rarely. Same with the puzzles that have the clue "person A arrived the day after person B". They are a little harder than the regular puzzles.

I used to make a chart with The 5 people, and use that to complete the puzzle. I hardly ever need to do that now.

Perfecto!

SubG, I am horrible at these, but I figured out your system when I started and it definitely works perfectly! You are missing NUTTIN! This is the quickest, easiest and most logical way to do the 5 People statement IMHO. Now if I could only CONCENTRATE harder.
