Default How did the remaining cells become filled?

I tried the challenging puzzle, and needed hints. There was no reasoning behind the hints, just that the remaining cells were null or whatever. How did they become that way?

My guess would be that the cells that have been crossed out are the hint, and that's how they became 'null' am not 100% sure though as I haven't used the hint button but that that would be my best guess.

I don't think there is any logic behind the hints. The site simply eliminates some previously "open" options to help speed you on your way to finding the valid matches.
